New Mercedes-Benz Citan Van Receives One of its First Tuning Jobs

The new Citan urban delivery van is the fruit of the partnership between Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance. It is based on the French firm's successful Kangoo series and is available in three different body variants.

While it hasn't been on the market that long since European sales began in October, the Citan has already caught the attention of tuners, with German aftermarket company KTW Tuning presenting, if not the first, one of the first programs for Mercedes' smallest commercial vehicle.

From 1985 to 1992, secret agent MacGyver was able to save the world some 139 times (that's the number of the TV series' episodes) using nothing more than everyday materials and of course, his trusty Swiss Army knife and duct tape.

Two decades after the action-adventure television series ended, Angus MacGyver, played by Richard Dean Anderson, may have lost his famous blonde mullet but his skills remain in demand.

New Photos and Video of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz Citan Van Series

At the Beurs van Berlage, a prominent building on the Damrak in the center of Amsterdam, Mercedes-Benz hosted the world premiere of its new Citan compact van series before the public gets a first look at the vehicle at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover in September.

Mercedes-Benz's entry in the lucrative and growing sector of urban delivery and passenger vans is the result of Daimler's strategic partnership with the Renault-Nissan Alliance as the Citan is based on the Renault Kangoo series.

The Citan will eventually be sold in three different body variants including a panel van, a crew bus and the Mixto. The commercial version of the Citan will offer buyers a choice of three different lengths (3.94 m, 4.32 m and 4.71m).

The five-seater Mixto passenger van is based on the longest platform (4.71m) and features folding rear seat bench, a wire mesh partition separating the load compartment, and two sliding doors.

New Mercedes-Benz Citan Van is a Renault Kangoo in Disguise

Mercedes-Benz has lifted the curtains off its new Renault Kangoo-based Citan delivery van several months ahead of its first public outing at the 2012 IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover this September.

The Citan is the first project to come out of the partnership between Mercedes-Benz's parent company Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance, which was formed in 2010. The new Mercedes van will be produced at Renault's factory in Maubeuge, France, where the automaker assembles the Kangoo.

Scoop: New Mercedes-Benz Citan wears its Production Gear

Less than a week after we brought the first spy photos of Mercedes-Benz's engineers trying out a test mule of the German brand's upcoming Citan van, our man with the long lens was able to spot the final production version.

Whereas the previous prototype featured was essentially a slightly modified Renault Kangoo, this one is a…Renault Kangoo with a Mercedes front end featuring the firm's family grille with the star in the middle and from the little we can tell, the tail lamps as well.

Spied: Mercedes-Benz Testing Renault Kangoo-Based Citan Van

Here's our first real life glimpse of Mercedes-Benz's upcoming Citan urban delivery van that was teased through a handful of sketches earlier this month. If the Citan's shape looks familiar, that is because it's based on the Renault Kangoo series.

To elaborate, the two automotive groups have formed a strategic alliance that will see them working together on a number of projects including, but not limited to, the development of a common platform for the next Smart models and the Renault Twingo.

Mercedes-Benz Sketches New Citan Deliver Van Co-Developed with Renault-Nissan

These are the first official sketches of Mercedes-Benz's all-new Citan, which the German automaker describes as an 'urban delivery van'. The Citan will make its world premiere at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover this September and go on sale before the end of the year.

In spite of the fact that Mercedes-Benz does not mention it in its press release, the automaker had previously revealed that the small van was developed in partnership with the Renault-Nissan alliance as part of their strategic collaboration, which includes several more projects such as the Twingo/Smart platform and powertrain cross-supply.

The Citan broadens Mercedes-Benz's offerings in in the lower weight classes of the van market, which include the Vito (2.77 to 3.2 tons), Sprinter (3.0 to 5.0 tons) and Vario (6.0 to 8.2 tons).

The German company said that the small van segment has picked up in sales these past couple of decades and has now grown to around 700,000 units in Europe alone. It added that it plans to gain a market share of four to five percent in this segment with the Citan, which equals to 28,000 to 35,000 units a year in Europe.
